You changed the question!--You did not say clear coat the first time. The abrassive paper is wrapped around a flat sponge. Dip the paper& sponge into a bucket or pan of water and slop water with this sponge onto the part being sanded while sanding. You can not get too much water on the paper and on the part. Keep rinsing the paper to prevent paint build up, that would clog the grit. Pretend that you are scrub washing the part (only you are scrubing with sponge& paper instead of a wash rag.) Rinse thourally and dry with a non lint rag such as cheese cloth or a shammy.

I still think that #600 grit would work just fine, even under a clear coat.

If you do not like my answer--ask someone at a paint shop!!
